Kentish Downs is a hard-working family stud based in Wagga Wagga NSW.
Established in 1960, the stud was relocated to Holbrook in 2000 when Rob and Jody Martin and the family hit the ground running with their direct approach to finding success.
In 2019, Rob and Jody Martin placed their property and the Kentish Downs Poll Dorset Stud on the market, as they looked for a lifestyle change and to move closer to family in South Australia.
Late last year, Craig and Karen Wilson made a strategic decision to expand their agricultural enterprises further and purchased Kentish Downs Poll Dorset Stud from the Martin family at Holbrook. The stud was relocated to “Yarragundry West”, near Wagga Wagga on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River with irrigated lucerne.
In 2020, Kentish Downs will offer high-quality Poll Dorset rams with Australian Sheep Breeding Values to supply a gap in the market and suit the specific needs of clients breeding objectives.
Artificial insemination and using Matesell allows single mating of one sire to selected ewes allowing Craig to fine-tune the breeding of rams which will then be offered for sale. All sheep have been DNA tested to allow the accuracy of data and pedigree. The sires used in the 2020 mating average in the top 1% of the Lambplan database for the Terminal Carcass Production Index.
In the near future, Kentish Downs plans to expand, increasing from joining 600 Poll Dorset ewes this year to 800 next year and potentially 1000 the year after.
“Applying the data to achieve genetic gain will be a very rewarding experience and one that others will benefit from as well,” Craig said.
